Doctor Emilee Pilkington Talks about Sleep Apnea

When I graduated dental school, I completed a mini-sleep residency at UNC after dental school as part of my continuing education, and through that I learned a lot about sleep apnea and how that is really affecting so many people, you know, in our community. And one of the things with sleep apnea is basically what's happening is people are stopping breathing in the middle of the night multiple times, and when you stop breathing, your heart goes into overdrive, you're gasping for air, you're waking up, and so that can really affect the cardiovascular system and your overall health as well. So it's a very important issue that I think is gaining more and more traction and more and more people are talking about.

CPAP has always been the gold standard for sleep apnea, and it still is the gold standard for sleep apnea, but CPAP machines are not for everyone. Some people cannot tolerate CPAP machines, they're too bulky, some people just cannot do it. For patients who have mild or moderate sleep apnea, we do have alternatives.

Now if you have severe sleep apnea, CPAP machine may still be the only option for you, but for patients who have mild to moderate sleep apnea, we do offer mandibular advancement appliances, and so they are much thinner top and bottom, and it basically advances the mandible, the lower jaw advances that forward to pull that musculature forward, open up the airway so that patients can sleep and breathe better at night. By sleeping better, by breathing better at night, that's going to really impact their overall health and improve their quality of life as well.

Enjoy a Comfortable CPAP Alternative

We can create a custom oral appliance if you are dealing with obstructive sleep apnea. Here's what makes it such a smart choice:

  • Custom-Made - These aren't generic mouthguards. We create each appliance using digital scans of your bite. You can expect a precise, personalized fit
  • Simple and Discreet - The device is small, quiet, and easy to wear. You don't have to deal with bulky equipment, as you find with a CPAP machine. Traveling with it is as simple as popping it into your bag.
  • Keeps Your Airway Open - By gently repositioning your lower jaw during sleep, the appliance prevents your airway from collapsing. It reduces those dangerous breathing interruptions throughout the night.
  • Easy to Clean - A sleep appliance is far easier to clean than a CPAP machine. You can just use gentle soap and warm water to refresh your mouthguard.

We'll Help You Sleep Better

If you're ready for relief, we're ready to help. We'll be with you every step of the way with:

  • Initial Consultation - We'll start by talking through your symptoms, whether it's snoring, constant tiredness, or waking up throughout the night. This helps us understand what's going on and whether sleep apnea might be the culprit.
  • Sleep Study Coordination - If we suspect sleep apnea, we'll either arrange an in-house sleep study or connect you with your medical provider for diagnostic testing. This allows us to confirm what's happening while you sleep.
  • Custom Appliance Creation - Once you're diagnosed, we'll take precise digital impressions of your teeth. This information allows us to create a mandibular advancement device that's made for you.
  • Fitting and Instructions - At your fitting appointment, we'll make sure the appliance feels comfortable. We'll show you exactly how to use and care for it.

Get the rest you need by treating sleep apnea in Goldsboro. Feel free to mention it at your next checkup or schedule a consultation today.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnea

How do I know if I have sleep apnea?
The most common signs include loud snoring, frequent waking, daytime fatigue, and sometimes gasping for air during sleep. If your partner notices pauses in your breathing or you wake up tired even after a full night's sleep, you may have obstructive sleep apnea. We can screen you and guide you through a sleep study if needed.
What is a mandibular advancement device?

It's a small, custom oral appliance that gently shifts your lower jaw forward during sleep. This helps keep your airway open, preventing the soft tissues at the back of your throat from collapsing. It's a comfortable, effective alternative to a CPAP machine if you have mild to moderate OSA.

What if I already use a CPAP machine but don’t like it?

If you struggle with CPAP, you may find that an oral appliance is a more comfortable, low-maintenance option. If you've been diagnosed with mild or moderate sleep apnea, we can evaluate whether oral appliance therapy is right for you. We'll work with your physician to adjust your treatment plan.
