Doctor Bradley Adams Talks about Dental Crowns

A dental crown is basically used to cover a severely broken down or decayed tooth or a tooth that's just developed cracks in it. And so a cracked tooth can be lost prematurely in a very young person if that crack is allowed to proceed below the gum line or into the pulp of the tooth where the nerve and blood supply are. And so I tell patients what a crown is, is a crown basically acts like a hoop around a barrel.

That hoop on a barrel holds all the staves of that barrel together so they can't spread apart. And so when we place a dental crown on a tooth, that crown allows the patient when they're chewing and when they're in function or when they're smiling, keep that tooth together in one piece so that the crack doesn't propagate further. Same for a tooth that's badly decayed.

You can imagine that we need a lot of tooth structure to hold filling material in a tooth for many, many years because all that chewing force is working to spread that tooth apart. And when we place a crown over top of that tooth, it gives the patient one mass of tooth to bite on that then can't separate. Strengthens the tooth quite a bit.

There are also many cases where we use crowns to correct worn teeth. And so in patients that may be severe grinders or clenchers or have occupational exposure to abrasives such as farmers that spend all day in an open cab where the dust is constantly coming between their teeth every time they close, many times we'll have to do a full mouth of crowns to restore that patient back to the proper length of tooth so that when they smile, they show and display the right amount of tooth as well as restore the tops of the teeth so that when they're chewing, they have maximum chewing function.

Restore Strength & Function to Your Smile

You'll find a range of crown and bridge options at our practice. We'll help you choose the solution that fits your needs, timeline, and goals. Here's what's available:

  • Same-Day Crowns - Using our in-house CEREC technology, we design and create your crown in a single appointment.
  • Implant Crowns - If you're replacing a single missing tooth, we can anchor a custom crown to a dental implant.
  • Traditional Bridges - A trusted option for replacing one or more missing teeth, these bridges anchor to neighboring teeth.
  • Implant Bridges - This advanced solution anchors your bridge directly to dental implants for superior stability. This avoids the need to remove structure from any healthy teeth.

We'll walk you through each option and help you choose the restoration that's right for your smile.

Feel Confident in Every Step of Treatment

Getting a crown or bridge is straightforward when you know what to expect. We've designed our process to be efficient, comfortable, and focused on results that last. You can expect:

  • Comprehensive Consultation - We start by getting a complete picture of your oral health using digital X-rays and intraoral cameras. It helps determine the best approach for your restoration.
  • Simplified Crown Preparation - If you're receiving a crown, we'll prepare your tooth and take digital scans. When appropriate, our in-house CEREC system lets us design, mill, and place your crown the same day. You'll love the convenience!
  • Detailed Bridge Design - We work with a trusted local lab to craft your custom bridge. When it's ready, we'll either anchor it to teeth beside the gap or directly to dental implants.
  • Ongoing Support - You'll leave with clear aftercare instructions and how to protect your new restoration long-term. You also have our commitment to helping your restoration succeed for years to come.

We prioritize open communication, your comfort, and successful outcomes. Feel nervous? Sedation is available to make you feel at ease. Visit us for your dental crowns and bridges in Goldsboro.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns and Bridges

How long do crowns and bridges last?

With proper care, crowns and bridges can last 10 years or even longer. We use durable materials that resist wear and staining. Regular checkups, good brushing and flossing habits, and avoiding hard foods can all extend the lifespan of your restoration. We'll monitor your crown or bridge at each visit and let you know when it's time for maintenance or replacement.

What’s the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring strength and function. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth and is anchored either to nearby teeth or to dental implants. Both restore appearance and chewing ability. However, they serve different purposes depending on whether the tooth is still present or has been lost.

Is getting a crown or bridge painful?
The process is generally very comfortable. We use gentle techniques and local anesthetics to keep you relaxed during treatment. You may feel some sensitivity after placement, but this typically resolves within a few days. If you're anxious about dental treatment, we offer sedation to help you feel at ease.
